WACO, Texas – During the May 15 regular meeting of the Waco ISD Board of Trustees, Board President Stephanie Korteweg announced she is resigning from the school board, effective May 23.
Korteweg, who represents Trustee District 2, has served the district with distinction, bringing thoughtful leadership and a steadfast commitment to student success. First elected in 2015, she has been a consistent voice for academic excellence, empowering and valuing all, and supporting educators. Her tenure includes overseeing transformative changes across the district, including historic bond projects and improved systems of accountability and engagement.
“I am truly humbled and grateful for the opportunity to have walked alongside passionate leaders, educators, and board members to make a difference for our students and their families,” Korteweg said. “Together we have accomplished much, and I am confident that the Board will continue the legacy of success and will work to ensure that students and staff receive the support needed to sustain our trajectory of excellence.”
Fellow board members and district leadership expressed deep appreciation for Korteweg’s service and leadership.
“Ms. Kortewg’s impact on Waco ISD is immeasurable,” said Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Spicer. “She has guided the Board with grace and conviction during both challenging and celebratory times. Her advocacy has directly shaped better outcomes for students and staff across the district. I am grateful for all she has done for the district, and she will be missed.”
Under state law, the resignation will become effective May 23. Because more than a year remains in Korteweg’s term, the Board of Trustees will be required to fill the vacancy within 180 days. The board may either appoint a new trustee or call a special election (which would be held on November 4, 2025). A decision on how to proceed will be made at an upcoming board meeting.
Trustee District 2 includes portions of central and south Waco.
